Questions or hardware orders: contact@piing.io
Set up your membership, choose how customers check in, then test the first visit. Piing connects Apple and Google Wallet passes and recognition to your existing Shopify tools. Your loyalty provider keeps the points engine.
Not on Shopify? Retail ID is Piing for other commerce platforms, with recognition, kiosks and Wallet passes. Start with Piing for non-Shopify retailers and Set up Retail ID.

Your first check-in
What you need
A Shopify store, or a Retail ID account
On Shopify, the store is the only hard requirement. On any other commerce platform your recognition and Wallet implementation is scoped through Retail ID; see Piing for non-Shopify retailers.
For in-store check-ins
A Tap Box or any reader that can make an HTTP POST, if you want a tap at the door. No reader yet? You can start taking check-ins today on a tablet kiosk, the Shopify POS tile, printed QR signage, or the QR on the pass read by the barcode scanner already at your till, and add hardware later. Order one from contact@piing.io.
A store location
A store location in Shopify, set up under Shopify Admin then Settings then Locations. In Retail ID, locations are configured in the implementation and a kiosk can be assigned to one.
No developer accounts
Passes are issued and signed on Piing's own Apple and Google credentials, so you need no Apple Developer account and no Google Wallet account. There is nothing to upload and nothing to renew.
A way to pay
The Piing app subscription is billed through Shopify, using the Shopify Billing API. You approve the charge in your Shopify admin and it appears on your Shopify invoice. Retail ID is billed directly under its agreement, which confirms the price, currency and payment arrangements. Existing agreements retain their approved terms.
The setup wizard
After install, the Set up Piing item appears in the app navigation until you finish. The wizard branches on what you are setting up, so you only see the steps that apply. Every step can be skipped and finished later.
- 01
What are you setting up?
Pick in-store retail with check-ins, digital wallet passes with no hardware, or both. In-store does not have to mean hardware: a tablet kiosk, the Shopify POS tile, printed QR signage and the QR on the pass read by the barcode scanner already at your till all record check-ins with no reader at all.
- 02
Check-in hardware.
If you chose in-store, say whether you have a reader on hand, want to order one, or do not need one.
- 03
Brand & wallet pass.
Design the pass, upload your logo and set colours in one place. Everything saves together and goes live immediately.
- 04
Connect POS locations.
Match each Shopify POS location to a store code so check-ins attribute to the right store. Single-store setups auto-map on the first check-in; multi-store brands should import from Shopify POS.
- 05
Assign your reader and link physical NFC cards (hardware setups only).
Pair the reader using its pairing code from Hardware & Check-ins then Devices, and optionally link physical NFC cards for customers without a phone.
- 06
Connect your loyalty vendor.
Piing reads points and tier from Rivo, Yotpo, LoyaltyLion and Antavo. Awarding points back is a separate switch and it starts off. No loyalty vendor yet? Skip it; Piing still tracks check-ins, issues passes and powers push notifications on its own.
- 07
Connect messaging and wishlist apps.
Klaviyo, Attentive, Ometria and HubSpot, so campaigns fire on real in-store behaviour, plus Swym Wishlist Plus and Wishlist King so a restock or price drop reaches the pass. Piing's built-in push notifications work without any of them.
- 08
Run a test and go live.
Issue yourself a test pass, check in, and finish.
You can re-run the wizard at any time from Set up Piing, and a setup summary on the final step shows what's done and what's still to do.
Your first check-in
The fastest way to prove the pipeline end to end:
- 01
Go to Hardware & Check-ins then First Tap (or click Simulate check-in at the top of the Check-ins page).
- 02
Enter a customer email, pick a store, and click Send.
The check-in appears immediately in Hardware & Check-ins then Check-ins and in the home dashboard's recent check-ins list. Enabled event routes can send a Klaviyo metric or webhook delivery. A loyalty points award requires its own supported reward action to be enabled. Simulated check-ins carry the api source so you can tell them apart from real hardware check-ins in analytics.
With a reader, the real version is the same flow: issue a test wallet pass to your phone from the wizard or Settings then Wallet, then tap your reader at the door. The check-in should appear in Activity within seconds.
Connecting a Tap Box
- 01
Go to Hardware & Check-ins then Devices (the Stores and readers page) and assign your reader to a store. For readers that pair by code, click Generate Pairing Code and enter the code on the device.
- 02
For Tap Boxes and custom devices that authenticate with a key, go to Settings then API Keys & Devices, click Generate key, and copy the key immediately; it's only shown once.
- 03
In the reader's configuration, set the endpoint to https://app.piing.io/api/tap-reader/tap, paste the key as the bearer token, and add the x-piing-shop-domain header with your .myshopify.com domain.
Any device that can POST JSON works through the generic device endpoint, and Shopify POS works with no hardware at all via the Piing POS Tile under Hardware & Check-ins then POS Tile.
