Key terms glossary
Plain definitions for Piing recognition, Wallet passes, attribution, Intelligence and Alerts.
A short reference for the words used across Piing and this documentation.
Tap
The initial NFC or QR interaction seen by a recognition route. A tap may still need identity resolution and validation before it becomes a completed check-in.
Check-in
The completed record of a recognised customer's store visit. It includes the store, time, source and customer reference and can update the Wallet pass, staff context, Shopify metafields and enabled destinations.
Member
A customer recognised by Piing. Membership can be backed by a loyalty programme, Shopify store credit, merchant-controlled segments, visit status or a simple identity record.
Wallet pass
A branded pass in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. It can carry identity, a QR route, points, tier, available rewards, store credit, visits, membership status and merchant-configured messages. Wallet passes are included in the Piing per-store plan.
Wallet message
A merchant-configured update delivered through Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Supported moments include pass issuance, a completed check-in, a visit milestone or a saved-item change. A message requires an installed pass and the appropriate device settings; pass issuance alone does not confirm installation.
Browser push
An optional browser notification. Piing: Alerts can send public announcements to shoppers who explicitly subscribe to browser push. This is separate from a Wallet pass message.
Tier
A membership level. It can come from LoyaltyLion, Rivo, Yotpo or Antavo, from a merchant-controlled Shopify segment, or from visit rules configured for the programme.
Points
A balance owned by the connected loyalty platform. Piing can read the balance for the pass and staff context. Recording a visit back to the loyalty platform is separate and only occurs when the merchant enables it.
Store credit
A Shopify customer-account balance that can be shown as a live value on the pass. It allows a retailer to offer a useful membership pass without installing a points engine.
Kiosk
A pre-check-in welcome screen on a tablet. It can guide a returning customer to identify themselves with Wallet, NFC or QR where the tablet supports the route, and guide a first-time customer into the merchant's join flow.
Reader
The Piing hardware used for one-tap recognition. It can be mounted at the entrance or placed beside the kiosk. A reader is optional because kiosk, printed signage and Shopify POS work without it.
Channel or source
The route that created the event, such as kiosk, reader, printed sign, Shopify POS or a clearly labelled test. The source allows analytics to compare adoption and outcomes by route.
Attribution window
The merchant-configured period during which Piing can relate a later order to a visit. When a matching order arrives inside the window, Piing records a purchase outcome. When the window closes without one, it can record a no-purchase outcome.
Metafield
A structured value on a Shopify record. Piing writes selected visit context to customer metafields. Piing: Intelligence writes selected analysis outputs to its own app-owned customer metafields.
Profile refresh and legacy unit
New Intelligence plans count one successful customer profile refresh, regardless of enabled fields. Existing field-unit subscriptions retain their approved meter: one customer analysed for one enabled field. Failed refreshes, the five-customer preview and metafield repairs are excluded from new-plan usage.
Retail ID
The implementation route for non-Shopify and bespoke retail stacks. It carries the Piing recognition, Wallet and visit-event model into a retailer's actual commerce, CRM and loyalty systems.
