Install the Shopify app
Arrange Piing access, approve installation in Shopify and test the Wallet or in-store setup you choose.
This guide covers the native Piing Shopify app for Wallet passes, in-store recognition or both. The check-in and Shopify POS steps apply only to in-store setups.
Before you start
- For Wallet passes: a Shopify store and a known test customer.
- For in-store recognition: also configure a location under Shopify Settings, then Locations, and choose a recognition route.
A tablet kiosk, printed sign or Shopify POS needs no Piing reader. A Piing reader can be added now or later.
Not on Shopify? Start with Retail ID.
Install the app
- Contact Piing for the current installation link. Public App Store installation is not yet available.
- Open the supplied Shopify installation link and approve installation for the correct store.
- Review the Shopify access scopes requested for the Piing features.
- Open Set up Piing in the app navigation.
Complete the setup wizard
The wizard only shows the steps relevant to the selected setup:
- Choose the store journey. Select Wallet passes, in-store recognition or both.
- Choose recognition routes, if using stores. Kiosk, reader, printed QR signage and Shopify POS can be used in any practical combination.
- Set the pass design. Upload your brand logo, choose colours and review the Apple and Google Wallet pass.
- Map locations, if using stores. Confirm that each Shopify POS location and recognition route writes to the correct store.
- Pair devices. Pair kiosks and Piing readers where the rollout uses them.
- Choose the membership model. Loyalty points, Shopify store credit, merchant-controlled tiers, visit status or simple membership can provide the pass value.
- Connect the working stack. Current named integrations include LoyaltyLion, Rivo, Yotpo, Antavo, Klaviyo, Attentive, Ometria, HubSpot, Swym and Wishlist King, plus signed webhooks.
- Run a test. Test the routes you enabled. For Wallet, check a test pass. For in-store recognition, record a check-in and confirm the event reaches every enabled destination.
A loyalty integration is optional. Piing can still issue passes, record visits, attribute outcomes and use non-points membership values without one.
Validate the Wallet pass
If your setup includes Wallet passes, issue a pass to the known test customer and open it in Wallet. Confirm the brand, customer and selected membership fields are correct. For Wallet-only setups, the check-in, attribution and Shopify POS steps below are not required.
Validate the first check-in
For in-store setups, use a known test customer and the app's test check-in flow, or check in through the first real route planned for the store.
Confirm all of the following:
- the correct customer and store are attached to the check-in;
- the source identifies kiosk, reader, signage, Shopify POS or test correctly;
- the Wallet pass and staff context show the values the merchant selected;
- every enabled CRM, loyalty, wishlist or webhook destination receives the intended event;
- the event appears in visit analytics.
Validate attribution
If you use visit attribution, run two separate tests:
- Purchase outcome. Record a check-in, place a Shopify order for the same customer inside the configured attribution window, and confirm the order and value are attributed.
- No-purchase outcome. Record another check-in, place no order, wait for the full configured window to close, and confirm the no-purchase event appears.
These outcomes should be tested separately because downstream journeys may treat them differently.
Add the Shopify POS extension
For stores using Shopify POS, add the Piing tile to the relevant layout. Confirm staff can open it on the store tablet, select or recognise the customer, record the check-in and see the customer context approved for that role.
