Lock the tablet to the kiosk
Combine Piing's in-page protection with an operating-system or managed single-app mode before the tablet reaches the retail floor.
Piing hardens the kiosk page, but a web page cannot stop every operating-system gesture or expose a merchant's other apps safely on its own. Use a device-level single-app mode before a tablet becomes customer-facing.
The two layers
- Piing page protection keeps the kiosk full-screen, reduces accidental selection and zoom, and returns the experience to the pre-tap state after inactivity.
- Device protection stops customers leaving the browser or kiosk app, opening notifications, using the app switcher or reaching merchant data.
Test both layers together on the exact tablet and operating-system version used in store.
Before locking the device
- Pair the tablet and open the private launch link.
- Grant camera access to the kiosk origin.
- Test an Apple Wallet or Google Wallet QR with the front camera.
- Add the page to the home screen or configure the managed kiosk browser.
- Set the display and power policy so the screen remains available during trading hours.
One or two iPads
Apple Guided Access can hold an iPad in the kiosk browser or home-screen web app:
- Enable Guided Access in the iPad accessibility settings.
- Set a separate Guided Access passcode and store it away from customers.
- Open the live kiosk.
- Start Guided Access using the hardware-button shortcut shown by that iPad version.
- Disable unnecessary hardware controls and test that the app switcher and home screen cannot be reached.
Menu names can move between iPadOS versions. Use Apple's current device instructions if the setting is not where expected.
One or two Android tablets
Android screen pinning can hold the current browser or kiosk app on screen:
- Enable App pinning or Screen pinning in security settings.
- Require the device PIN before unpinning.
- Open the kiosk and pin the current app from the recent-apps screen.
- Test the device's unpin gesture and confirm it asks for the PIN.
Manufacturers use different names and power-management controls, so validate the steps on the exact model.
A retail fleet
For multiple sites, use mobile-device management or a dedicated kiosk browser. A managed setup can:
- launch the kiosk automatically after a restart;
- keep the screen awake on power;
- retain camera permission;
- restrict navigation and notifications;
- reload a failed page;
- update or restart devices remotely;
- rotate the Piing launch link in a controlled way.
Do not distribute one copied launch link to an entire fleet. Each Piing kiosk device should keep its own record, credential and store assignment.
Final floor check
- The correct store is assigned.
- The pre-tap screen is visible after restart.
- Camera access survives the chosen management mode.
- A real Wallet QR creates one recognised visit.
- Swiping, home gestures, notifications and the app switcher do not reveal another app.
- The unlock PIN is available to authorised staff but not written on the stand.
