Pair a tablet
Bind a tablet to one Piing kiosk and store using the 15-minute QR and PIN flow, or a private launch link.
Each pairing code connects one tablet to one kiosk and its assigned store. You can have several kiosks in the same store; each has its own code and PIN. The tablet cannot choose a different store after scanning.
Before you start
- Create or import the Piing store first.
- Put the tablet on the network and open its browser.
- Make sure the operator can reach Piing's Kiosks page.
- Choose the tablet's store in Piing before generating its code.
Option 1: pairing QR and PIN
- Open Hardware & check-ins, then Kiosks.
- Choose Add a tablet, give it a recognisable name and select its store.
- Show the pairing code.
- Scan the QR on the tablet or open the pairing address shown beneath it.
- Enter the 4-digit PIN on the tablet.
- The kiosk opens for its assigned store. Grant camera access and test a Piing pass.
The pairing challenge expires after 15 minutes and is single-use. The QR contains a temporary public pairing token, not the kiosk's long-lived device secret. The PIN is checked separately before Piing issues the private launch credential.
If the challenge expires or too many incorrect PIN attempts are made, generate a new code. Use the PIN shown with the newest code; generating another code cancels the previous one.
For an older tablet without a store, choose its store on the Kiosks page, select Save store, then Show pairing code.
Reconnect from Shopify POS
Staff can open the Piing tile's tablet section and reconnect a kiosk assigned to their register's store. Scan the code with the tablet and enter its PIN. This does not offer another store's kiosks or switch off an already connected tablet.
If the register is not linked to a Piing store, ask a manager to complete its POS-location mapping in Stores & readers. If no tablet is listed, add one to that store on the Kiosks page, then refresh POS.
Option 2: private launch link
For a managed device where scanning the pairing QR is inconvenient, choose Get a launch link and open that link in the tablet's browser.
The launch link contains the credential that runs the kiosk. Keep it private, place it only on the intended device and do not paste it into public documentation or signage.
Verify the pairing
The kiosk row shows whether the device is paired, its assigned store and recent activity. Test the whole journey, not only the launch page:
- confirm the pre-tap screen uses the expected brand;
- present a real Wallet QR to the camera;
- check the customer and store on the visit record;
- verify the recognised-member screen returns to the attract state after its timeout.
Re-pair, unpair or remove
- Re-pair in Piing admin reconnects a replacement tablet to the same kiosk and store. It invalidates the previous live link. Reconnect from POS keeps an existing live tablet running.
- Unpair stops the current tablet taking check-ins and revokes its launch link while keeping existing check-in history.
- Remove deletes the kiosk record from the list and also stops its launch link. Existing visits remain in analytics.
To move a tablet to another store, Unpair it, choose the new store, select Save store, then generate a fresh pairing code. This changes future visits, not historical records.
Use unpair or remove immediately if a launch link is exposed.
For Retail ID deployments, follow the tablet setup agreed with your Piing team.
