Set up an in-store tablet
Set up a branded tablet that welcomes members when they scan their Piing wallet pass and helps new customers join.
The Piing kiosk is a browser-based recognition experience for a tablet. It leads with a branded pre-tap screen, uses the front camera to read the QR on an Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass, then changes to a recognised-member welcome with the values you choose.
It is the strongest starting route when you want a visible customer experience without waiting for reader hardware or Apple VAS approval.
What you need
- A recent iPad, Android tablet or managed display with a modern browser and front camera.
- Stable power and network connectivity at the intended position.
- A secure stand or wall mount suitable for a public retail floor.
- At least one Piing store, plus the correct Shopify POS mapping where POS context is required.
- A published Wallet pass and useful programme values.
Use a dedicated or properly managed device. A customer-facing kiosk should not expose the merchant's Shopify admin, email, notifications or unrelated browser tabs.
The customer journey
Before recognition
The tablet stays on a branded attract screen. It explains that an existing member should present their Wallet pass to the camera and gives a separate join prompt for someone without one.
This is the screen most people see, so keep the headline direct and the membership proof concise. It should look like a live retail surface, not a backend dashboard.
Returning member
- The customer opens the QR on their Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass.
- They hold it within the tablet camera frame.
- Piing resolves the customer and applies the store's duplicate and check-in rules.
- The accepted visit is written to the store.
- The kiosk greets the customer and can show selected tier, points, rewards or wishlist context.
Use a Piing-issued pass. Your connected loyalty provider supplies the points and tier; the Piing pass identifies the customer in store.
New customer
The customer scans the kiosk's join QR with their own phone. The kiosk changes to the membership-benefits screen while the customer's phone opens the configured sign-up route with the saved attribution parameter.
Scanning the join QR does not by itself invent a customer, issue a pass or claim a completed first visit. The customer must finish the merchant's sign-up and pass journey before Piing can link future recognition to them.
Set it up
- Open Hardware & check-ins, then Kiosks.
- Add a tablet and assign its store. Each tablet has its own pairing code, even when several tablets share a store.
- Pair with the QR and 4-digit PIN, or securely open a private launch link on the device.
- Grant camera permission and test a real pass.
- Add the page to the home screen or use a managed kiosk browser.
- Apply an operating-system single-app lock before putting the device on the shop floor.
Keep the tablet on power, at a comfortable scan height, with the front camera unobstructed. Test under the actual lighting and screen angle used in store.
Add a reader beside it
A compatible reader assigned to the same store can drive the same recognised-member screen after a linked physical-card or approved Apple Wallet VAS tap. Piing enables that bridge by default. Turn it off in kiosk settings if the reader should record quietly while the kiosk remains on its attract screen.
Google Wallet remains a QR journey in Piing. Present it to the kiosk camera rather than tapping the phone on the reader.
