Issue and manage passes
How to choose the programme model, publish Apple and Google passes, distribute them through the right customer moments, and manage linked pass holders.
This article covers the day-to-day of getting passes onto customers' phones and managing them afterwards. The mechanics are the same for Apple and Google Wallet.
First, choose how the programme works
Before you design the card, Wallet Studio asks one question: what drives the programme. Everything after it follows, so it is worth answering deliberately. There are five options, listed with what you already run first and what Piing can do on its own last.
- Points from your loyalty app. Supported sources are LoyaltyLion, Yotpo, Rivo, and Antavo. Points and tiers remain in that service; Piing reads the current state onto the pass. Nothing migrates.
- Store credit. No loyalty app needed. Where your commerce platform holds native store credit, the pass shows the customer's real balance, formatted as money in your own currency. Piing only ever reads it, and never credits or debits an account. On Shopify this needs the store credit permission granted; until it is, the option is shown but disabled with the reason.
- Tiers from customer segments or tags. Each tier can match a Shopify customer segment or customer tag. Order the ladder from lower to higher because the last matching rule wins. A balance is optional.
- Visits counted by Piing. Piing counts check-ins and promotes customers at thresholds you set. Works with no other app, and the number on the card is one you own. Below the first threshold no tier is claimed, because they have not earned one yet.
- One card for everyone. No tiers, no balance. A membership card that identifies the customer at the till. The quickest way to get a pass live.
You then choose whether the prominent value is loyalty points, Shopify store credit, visit count, or nothing, and set its label. Up to eight programme tiers can be defined. Apple and Google each have a default design plus optional per-tier designs.
If something is missing, Wallet Studio says so before you can issue: no loyalty app connected, no segment behind a tier, no visit threshold set. One card for everyone has no prerequisites at all.
How passes get issued
A customer receives a pass through a claim link, which leads to an Add to Apple Wallet or Save to Google Wallet button. You can put that link in front of customers in a few ways:
- Storefront and account surfaces, including the theme app block, checkout thank-you page, order status page, and customer account extensions.
- A public pass page for email, SMS, QR, and other sites, copied from Wallet Studio, then Where your pass appears.
- From the kiosk, where a new customer scans the on-screen join QR to sign up and gets a pass on their phone. See Set up an in-store tablet.
- From a scan-in point, the printed sign customers scan to check in. See Scan-in points.
Public publish routes and per-customer install handoffs are different. The public route can stay in a campaign or printed asset while the pass remains published. Piing creates a short-lived, customer-bound install token at the point of handoff. Do not put the short-lived install URL into permanent signage. See Claim links and QR codes.
Where to find pass holders
The Pass holders area maps Piing member IDs to Shopify customers. You can search the directory, open the customer record, view the linked digital or physical identifier, inspect check-ins and cards, export links, and send a real test message from the customer page.
Correct a link
The pass-holder directory can unlink a member ID from one Shopify customer and link it to another. Physical cards have additional activate, deactivate, unlink, and delete controls under Hardware, then Physical cards. Digital passes are reinstalled through a fresh public handoff rather than edited as a physical card record. See Physical NFC cards.
Passes update themselves
You do not issue a new pass merely to change a value or design. Piing can refresh fields from the connected source, repaint installed passes after a design save, and update visit data after a check-in. A separate customer-visible Wallet message is optional. See Wallet messages and optional web push.
Note
Wallet passes are unlimited and included on every plan, with no per-pass fees and no caps. You can issue as many as you like. See the pricing page for what each plan includes.
Checking a single customer
If you want to confirm a specific customer's pass is working, send a test from the Notifications hub or their pass-holder profile. See Send a test push.
