Connect Attentive
Send in-store tap events to Attentive so SMS and email journeys respond to real shop-floor visits, matched to the right subscriber.
Connecting Attentive turns an in-store tap into an Attentive custom event, so the SMS and email journeys you already run can respond the moment a customer walks in. Attentive surfaces the event in the Segment Builder and Journey Builder, matched to the subscriber by phone or email.
What data flows
- A custom event for every check-in, raised whether the customer taps a card, taps their wallet pass, or scans the QR kiosk.
- Subscriber matching. Piing includes the customer's email and phone in the event's user block, plus the customer ID from your commerce platform (on Shopify, the Shopify customer ID) as an external identifier, so Attentive attaches the event to the right subscriber.
- Enriched event properties. The store visited, VIP tier, visit counts, and the time of the visit ride along as properties, so a single journey can behave differently for a first-timer and a regular.
Note
Attentive's Custom Events API is for behavioural data, not sensitive information. Piing's payload carries identifiers and visit context only, never special-category data.
Before you start
- An Attentive account where you can create a custom app and generate an API key.
- Piing set up with at least one recorded check-in to test against. See Install the Shopify app on Shopify, or Set up Retail ID for a scoped non-Shopify implementation.
How to connect
- In the Attentive platform, open the App Marketplace and click Create App.
- Give the app a name (for example "Piing") and a contact email.
- Set permissions. The app needs Write access to Custom Events so Piing can send check-ins. Leave the APIs you do not need on No Access.
- Click Create. Attentive shows the API key once, so copy it now.
- In Piing, go to Integrations, find Attentive, paste the API key, and save.
Piing validates the key immediately by calling Attentive's account endpoint. If the key is wrong you get a specific error and nothing is saved. Once connected, the card shows a Connected badge.
Tip
to rotate the key later, open the app's setup page in Attentive, regenerate the key, then paste the new one into Piing. Until you do, events pause.
What to expect after connecting
The next time a customer taps in, the event appears in Attentive against the matched subscriber, usually within a few seconds. The event itself does not send anything; whether it sends an SMS or email is up to the journey you build in Attentive and the customer's subscription status. Piing triggers the event, and Attentive respects its own consent rules.
Test the connection
- Record a test check-in for a customer whose email or phone matches an Attentive subscriber, using the app's test or first-tap flow.
- In Attentive, build a segment or journey trigger on the check-in custom event and confirm the event is available.
Ideas to build
- A store-visit journey triggered by the check-in event, with a same-day text for customers who came in.
- A browser follow-up on the tap-without-purchase event, nudging customers who visited but did not buy.
- A segment of customers who visited a particular store or hold a particular tier, built from the event properties.
If something looks wrong
- No event in Attentive? Re-check the API key in Integrations and confirm the custom app has Write access to Custom Events.
- Event not matching a subscriber? Confirm the customer's email or phone on your commerce platform, Shopify for example, matches the subscriber in Attentive.
- Still stuck? Contact us and we will help trace the event.
Piing connects to other CRM and messaging tools the same way, including Klaviyo, Ometria, and HubSpot. See the full list on the integrations page, or read the integrations overview.
