Connect Shopify
How Piing uses Shopify customers, orders, metafields and webhooks for recognition, attribution and staff context.
Shopify is the primary customer and order record for the native Piing product. Piing resolves an in-store check-in to the relevant Shopify customer, records the visit, watches the configured attribution window for an order, and writes selected visit context back to Shopify metafields.
If the retailer does not use Shopify, the equivalent commerce and identity connection is scoped through Retail ID.
What data flows
- Identity. The check-in route supplies the identifier and context needed to resolve the relevant Shopify customer.
- Visit. The completed check-in carries the store, source, time and customer reference.
- Attribution. Shopify order webhooks allow Piing to relate a later order to the visit inside the merchant's configured window.
- Outcomes. A visit followed by an attributed order and a visit whose window closes without an order produce separate signals.
- Customer context. Selected visit totals, recent store, Wallet status, loyalty values and supported customer context can be written to Shopify metafields.
Shopify remains the primary customer record. Piing stores the operational visit, routing and attribution records required to provide the enabled workflows. Payment card details do not pass through Piing.
How to connect
- Install Piing from the Shopify App Store, or open it under Apps in Shopify admin if it is already installed.
- Approve the Shopify access scopes requested for the product features being enabled.
- Complete the Piing setup wizard and confirm the store locations.
- Add at least one recognition route: kiosk, reader, printed sign or Shopify POS.
- Record a check-in for a known test customer.
- Confirm the visit appears against the correct customer and location.
Shopify registers the app billing and provides the customer and order webhooks used by the product. Loyalty, CRM, messaging and wishlist connections are configured separately under Integrations.
Test attribution
Before testing in store, make the pass available to the customer. Piing supports new customer accounts through Piing Digital Card, legacy account and storefront templates through Piing Wallet Card where app-block sections are available, and upgraded Thank you and Order status pages through Piing Thank You - Wallet. Each placement is added separately.
Follow Where to place Piing blocks in Shopify for the correct editor, theme requirements and visual examples.
- Choose a known test customer and record a check-in.
- Confirm the check-in source and store are correct.
- Place an order for that customer inside the configured attribution window.
- Confirm the purchase outcome records the order and attributed value.
- For a no-purchase test, use a separate visit and allow the full configured window to close without an order.
- Confirm each enabled downstream destination receives the appropriate event.
What other Shopify tools can use
Visit context written to customer metafields can be used by Shopify Flow, Shopify customer segments and other metafield-aware tools. Piing: Intelligence writes its own selected output to app-owned customer metafields. Piing: Alerts uses Shopify customer and storefront context for targeting inside the theme. Each product is installed and billed separately.
If something looks wrong
- The customer is not recognised. Confirm the test customer exists in Shopify and that the recognition route is paired to the correct store.
- No purchase outcome appears. Confirm the order belongs to the same customer and was placed inside the configured window.
- No no-purchase outcome appears. Confirm the full window has closed and that a later order did not convert the visit.
- A destination did not receive the event. Check its connection status and delivery log under Integrations.
- Shopify fields look empty. Confirm the relevant fields are enabled and that the receiving tool is reading the correct metafield definitions.
