Connect Rivo
Bring Rivo points and tiers into a Piing-issued Wallet pass, recognise members in store, and optionally reward qualifying visits.
Connecting Rivo puts your loyalty programme on the shop floor. Piing reads a member's live points and tier on tap-in to drive the recognition screen, and can record each visit back to Rivo so your own earning rules award the points. Customers use a Piing-issued Apple or Google Wallet pass. Rivo remains the system of record for points, tiers and programme rules.
What data flows
- Read on tap-in. Piing looks the customer up in Rivo and pulls back their points balance and VIP tier. Both appear on the recognition screen the moment they walk in, and both go onto the wallet pass.
- Write the visit. Piing can record the check-in back to Rivo as a points event. Rivo applies the points using your earning rules. This is a switch you turn on, and it starts off.
- One balance across channels. Points earned for visits land in the same Rivo account the customer uses online, and the pass updates to match.
Rivo remains the points ledger. With optional awards enabled, Piing sends the amount configured on the trigger, or the configured Rivo custom action. There is no bulk upload of your customer or loyalty data. For the full picture of what Piing reads back from connected tools, see what Piing reads back from your stack.
Before you start
- A Rivo plan that includes the Developer Toolkit. This is where Rivo keeps REST API keys, and access depends on your plan. If you cannot see the Developer Toolkit under Settings in Rivo, your plan does not include it yet, and Rivo will ask you to upgrade or speak to your account manager.
- A Piing install with at least one recorded check-in to test against. See Install the Shopify app on Shopify, or Set up Retail ID for a scoped non-Shopify implementation.
Treat the API key like a password. It grants read and write access to your whole loyalty programme.
Get your key from Rivo
- In the Rivo dashboard, go to Settings, then Developer Toolkit.
- Under REST API keys, click Generate API key.
- Copy the key.
Rivo keeps one REST API key per store, so there is no separate key just for Piing. If you click Regenerate API key later, the old key stops working everywhere at once, so come back and paste the new one into Piing.
Add it to Piing
- In Piing, go to Integrations, then open Loyalty platforms.
- On the Rivo card, click Connect.
- Paste the key into API key and set Status to Active. Leave Dispatch mode on Direct API.
- Click Save.
- Click Test connection.
Saving and testing are two separate steps. Saving stores the key without checking it, so always run Test connection afterwards. A good key returns a tick. A bad one returns the status Rivo sent back, and the card stays unconnected.
Your key is encrypted at rest and is never shown again after you save it. If you lose track of it, generate a fresh one in Rivo and paste that in.
Reading points and tier starts as soon as the connection tests clean. Awarding points back is a separate switch, covered below.
What appears on the pass
Once Rivo is connected, the pass shows the member's points balance and VIP tier, refreshed through Piing's supported refresh and check-in workflows. Provider availability and the Wallet app affect when a change appears; a visible notification is not guaranteed. Which fields appear where is up to your pass design, under Wallet, then Design.
Piing reads the balance and the tier, and nothing else. It does not read the member's individual Rivo rewards, so the pass and the recognition screen will not list what they can redeem in Rivo. If a kiosk shows a rewards count, that comes from the reward catalogue you set up in Piing, not from Rivo.
Piing prefers Rivo's API for this. If Rivo Shopify Metafields is switched on under Settings, then Developer Toolkit, Piing can also read the balance from the Shopify customer record as a fallback. That toggle sits behind the same plan gate as the API key. With an API key saved, the pass stays current either way.
Awarding points for a visit
Awarding is off until you turn it on. When you do, Piing records each qualifying check-in to Rivo as a points event, and Rivo awards the points.
By default Piing sends a plain points event with the amount set on the Piing trigger. If you would rather the visit show up in Rivo's own widget and reporting as a named action, create a custom action in Rivo, then put its exact name in the Custom action name field on the Rivo card in Piing. Piing will fire that action instead.
Check which triggers are on before you enable awarding. Piing ships with check-in, first-time customer and wallet pass installed switched on, so those three start firing as soon as the master switch goes on.
One Piing pass, connected to Rivo
Issue the customer a Piing pass and show their connected Rivo balance and tier on it. Piing manages the pass and its supported updates; Rivo owns the loyalty programme.
Apple and Google passes can both be recognised through their Piing QR code. Apple Wallet NFC needs the required issuer entitlement and a compatible Apple VAS reader. Google Wallet currently uses QR in Piing. A linked physical Piing card can tap a compatible reader independently of either Wallet platform.
Use the native Piing Digital Card block for Shopify new customer accounts. A theme block is a separate placement. See Shopify block placements.
Test the connection
- Click Test connection on the Rivo card. This calls Rivo with your key and reports what comes back.
- Record a test check-in for a customer who is already a Rivo member, using an email that matches their Rivo profile.
- Confirm their points and tier appear on the recognition screen and on the pass.
- If you switched awarding on, open that member in Rivo and confirm the points event was recorded.
- Install the Piing pass on iPhone and Android. Scan each Piing QR and confirm the same Shopify customer is recognised.
If something looks wrong
- Test connection fails with an authorisation error. The key is wrong, or someone regenerated it in Rivo. Generate a fresh key and paste it in again.
- Test connection fails and you cannot find the Developer Toolkit in Rivo. Your Rivo plan does not include it. Upgrading, or asking your Rivo account manager to enable it, is the only route to a key.
- Member not recognised, or points show as zero. Piing looks the customer up by Shopify customer ID first, then by email. Confirm the email on the Shopify customer matches the email on their Rivo profile, and that they are a Rivo member rather than a guest.
- Points and tier stop updating during a busy spell. Rivo allows 15 requests per second per key by default and returns an error above that. Piing backs off and retries, so this normally clears itself.
- Piing pass not scanning. Confirm the customer installed a Piing-issued pass for your store, then scan its Piing QR code. Their Rivo points and tier appear through the connected loyalty programme; they do not need a separate Rivo pass.
- Points not awarded. Check that awarding is switched on in Piing, that the trigger you expect is enabled, and that the matching earning rule is active in Rivo.

Piing connects to other loyalty platforms the same way, including Yotpo, LoyaltyLion, and Antavo. See the full list on the integrations page, or read the integrations overview.
